Jeffrey “Rocky” Burnell is a long-term Queanbeyan resident and proud of it.
One of Queanbeyan’s most recognisable residents, Rocky is an avid rugby league supporter and spent many years donning the famous Queanbeyan Blues colours. He was a Blues Junior in 1968 and went on to play many first-grade games for the club. He would later serve on the Board of the club for many years.
Alongside his great mate Tucker Thompson, Rocky took over Walsh’s Hotel and restored it to the institution it is today. He worked at the pub and bottle shop for 30 years until retiring this year.
Using the experience he gained on the Boards of several local rugby league clubs, Rocky became a founding committee member of the Queanbeyan Specials Needs Group, which later became known as Treehouse. Over the years, Rocky has helped fundraise over $250,000 for the group, and Treehouse’s Annual Golf Day has become a must-attend event.
Rocky Is always the first to volunteer for a good cause and was one of the driving forces behind the recent Women of Queanbeyan calendar, which raised more than $50,000 for local charity Rise Above. A Men of Queanbeyan calendar is set to be launched in early 2022, with all funds going to the Respite Care for QBN Foundation.
